What a Stumble Knows of Grace

If not for a stumbling step or two,
would grace be only a remembered kiss?

Yet the needy and hungry few,
call it such sweet and undeserved bliss!

For what doth perfection know of grace?
Do not the full have no need for food?

It settles far from recompense
and trusts its own payment true.

But prideful hearts shall condemn
their own lofty and self-righteous pace.

And only those with brokenness find
what a stumble knows of grace!
